Music
Intent
The music curriculum at Grove Primary School aims to foster a love, passion and enjoyment of music, be that in listening to, appreciating or playing music. Our children will develop respect through a growing awareness of contemporary and historical musicians and genres. We celebrate and value an individual's skills related to performing, creating and analysing music that we study. Through exploring the different genres and musicians, children will develop their confidence by performing, analysing and exploring music. We aim to raise children's musical palette and aspirations in their future careers, which may be linked to the performing arts.
At Grove we are guided by the National Curriculum for Music (2014).
The National Curriculum for music aims to ensure that all pupils:
- perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians
- learn to sing and to use their voices, to create and compose music on their own and with others, have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, use technology appropriately and have the opportunity to progress to the next level of musical excellence
- understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated, including through the inter-related dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notation

Our music curriculum uses Music Express as a resource to cover our Key Concepts of the music curriculum:
Structure, Notation, Performing, Composing, Beat, Pitch Exploring Sounds
As well as this, we aim to offer other musical opportunities for our children. These include:
- Individual/group guitar and ukulele lessons
- Rock Choir
- Opportunities for performances in the local area
Private Music Tuition
We offer ukulele and guitar lessons for KS2- these lessons are delivered by Mr Graham Syed.

Musician of the Month
Our Musician of the Month is promoted across the school. This is done so in class and in assemblies allowing children to learn some more about the history of music and the impact that the artists have on the music world today. There is one classical musician per term, popular music and musical traditions with a spread of diversity, gender, world and UK musicians.

Impact
Throughout the child’s journey at Grove their musical skills and understanding are built year on year, from singing nursery rhymes and action songs from memory and performing simple rhythm patterns on tuned and untuned percussion instruments in Early Years, progressing their skills and understanding in KS1 to further developing their skills and knowledge of the subject in KS2, where the children access music confidently, and have the ability to read and follow a simple musical or graphical score. Throughout all of this the child’s enjoyment of music is a key element, running alongside the ‘taught’ musical skills and objectives. Our uptake of our Rock Choir is testament to the enjoyment of music across the school.
